In Memphis, there is no such thing as a “spider season.” Instead, these creepy arachnids tend to stay active all year long and can invade your home any time of the year. While most spiders in this area are harmless, a couple can cause some people to experience dangerous symptoms when bitten.
At Chief Termite & Pest Control, our Memphis pest control professionals can help you identify and eliminate all the spiders in your home. Here is a look at what you should do if you are seeing spiders in your Memphis home.
Homeowners are likely to see three types of home-invading spiders in Memphis and around their property. The wolf spider is the species most commonly found in homes. These spiders have large, hairy bodies that give them an intimidating appearance. They can measure over 1 3/8 inches long and have thick bodies that can be a combination of dark brown, tan, and yellow. This spider may look scary, but they are considered harmless to humans and will usually go out of their way to avoid people and pets.
The black widow is one of the dangerous spiders local to Memphis. These spiders have six thin legs, a large round abdomen, and a shiny black body. Underneath the black widow’s abdomen is a bright red marking shaped like an hourglass.
The other venomous spider in this area is the brown recluse. This spider is much smaller than the other two and typically only measures about a 1/2 inch long. It has a thin body and legs that are usually light brown. The most noticeable feature of the brown recluse is its dark violin-shaped marking on the back of its dorsum.
The brown recluse and the black widow are the only venomous spiders in Memphis. However, if you see any spider in your home, you should contact a spider exterminator as soon as possible because it could mean you have a bigger problem in your home.
If a venomous spider bites you, you could experience fever, muscle spasms, trouble breathing, and nausea. If you feel any of these symptoms or experience severe pain after being bitten by one of these spiders, you should seek medical attention as soon as possible.
If you see these spiders in your home, you should never try to catch or trap them. Instead, call an experienced spider removal specialist as soon as possible.
Spiders will come into your home throughout the year. Because they squeeze through small crevices and cracks, our local spider exterminators suggest that you inspect the outside of your home and seal off any cracks around vents, windows, and other areas.
Other things that you can do to prevent a spider invasion include:
If spiders have a place to hide inside your home, they will be more likely to stay for an extended period of time. A spider control technician can inspect your home and determine why there are so many spiders around your property.
